Looking Back to Grow Forward: 50 Years of Landscaping in New Mexico

As the Native Plant Society celebrates its 50th Anniversary, we invite you to join Panelists Judith Phillips (Judith Phillips’ Design Oasis), Linda Churchill (Santa Fe Botanical Garden), Charles Doerwald (El Toro Landscape), and moderator Tracy Neal (horticulturist) to discuss how landscape design, materials, and practices have changed in our region.  Water availability, climate change, plant and hardscaping material availability, and landscaping preferences have changed how we garden and what our future landscapes may look like.  What lessons have we learned and how can we make our landscapes more sustainable?  Whether you are a landscape professional, gardener, or simply passionate about your yard, you will gain practical insights and inspiration for designing, planting, and stewarding our outdoor spaces.

Location: Santa Fe Woman’s Club, 1616 Old Pecos Trail

Time: 1:30 – 3:45pm. Doors open at 1pm.  Panel discussion 1:30 – 3:00pm.  Reception with book and poster sale 3:00 – 3:45pm

Free, with a suggested donation of $10

Judith Phillips is a landscape designer who prefers working with arid-adapted native plants because they are beautiful, conserve water, and support wildlife. With over 2000 landscapes designed and six books and numerous articles written encouraging people to garden with a passion for the high desert, she’s spent more than half a lifetime in very good company.

Linda Churchill is the Director of Horticulture at Santa Fe Botanical Garden. Linda worked for Santa Fe landscaping firms for several years before forming a design-build landscape partnership with colleagues, where she developed skills in many areas of garden design and maintenance. She believes in creating gardens where people of all ages can connect to the awe and beauty of the natural world now and in the future.

Charles Doerwald is the owner of El Toro Landscape, a custom landscape firm in Santa Fe since 1997, that designs, installs and maintains small to large scale landscape projects with an emphasis on sustainability. Charles pursued a Master’s Degree in Landscape Architecture at The University of New Mexico.

Tracy Neal worked in nurseries in Albuquerque for 10 years before moving to Santa Fe in 1986 to run the nursery at Santa Fe Greenhouses. In 1995 he started a landscape design/build firm with a friend and worked as a designer and horticultural manager for many years. He now works as a landscape consultant.
