Wednesday, January 5th at 7 p.m.: “Gardening in Times of Climate Change, Water Crisis, Polar Vortexes, Pandemics, and the Sixth Extinction” with George Miller

The massive worldwide loss of insect populations has created a modern “Insect “Apocalypse.” The collapse of the foundation of the food chain pyramid is destabilizing ecosystems from farmlands to rainforests. In the last 30 years monarch butterfly populations have plunged 90%, for a loss of 900 million in North America. By turning our yards into pollinator-friendly landscapes, we can restore part of the habitat lost by urban development. The key is choosing native plants that provide three-seasons of food, shelter, and nesting for butterflies, bees, and birds. With pollinators, it’s true that “Build it and they will come.”

Long-time environmental photojournalist, writer, and botanist, George Oxford Miller received a Masters in botany and zoology from the University of Texas, Austin. As a journalist he specializes in conservation issues, outdoor recreation, and native plant subjects and has published in New Mexico Magazine, Texas Highways, Living Bird, Wildlife Conservation, and in numerous newspapers across the nation. His book, “Landscaping with Native Plants of Texas,” one of a three-part series including the Southwest and Southern California, won the Texas Library Roundtable Award for Best Reference Book. Recent publications include Native Plant Gardening for Birds, Bees and Butterflies: Southwest, and a family-oriented guide, Backyard Science and Discovery Workbook: Southwest. George was President of the Albuquerque Chapter of the Native Plant Society for a number of years until handing off the responsibility at the end of 2020.
