Invasive Plants in New Mexico, Sylvan Kaufman will present on invasives that we are likely to encounter in our area. She and her father, Wallace Kaufman, recently published the third edition of a complete guide to invasive plants in natural areas and she will have copies available for purchase. Her talk will include definitions, history and identification of some common NM invasive plants, the changes they have caused, species to be on the lookout for, and some general ways to manage or eradicate invasive plants found in our area.
Bio: Sylvan Kaufman is the State Conservation Chair for the Native Plant Society of NM and the President of the Santa Fe Chapter. She earned her Ph.D. in Ecology and Evolution from Rutgers University for her work on Melaleuca (paperbark tree) adaptations in Florida. She did post-doctoral work in ecology at Harvard University, and went on to become Conservation Curator for Adkins Arboretum on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. She participated for many years with the Maryland Invasive Species Council. Sylvan writes, teaches and advises on landscape restoration and native plants for landscaping in Santa Fe.
