Evening Blooms & Desert Flora on Tortugas Trail

Meet on the west side of A Mountain at the Tortugas Trail parking area (contact the chapter for directions and additional information).

Join us for an evening plant walk along the base of A Mountain (Tortugas Mountain) to observe a diverse array of flowering Chihuahuan desert plant species. We’re hoping to catch two cacti in bloom: the strawberry hedgehog cactus and eagle claw cactus, both of which are abundant around A Mountain. We should see numerous other species in flower, including stinging cevallia, hairy five eyes, hairyleaf bahia and beautiful ocotillos in full bloom. We’ll make our way back to the trailhead as the sun gets low, offering us a beautiful view of the sunset over Las Cruces.
