Wednesday, May 4 at 7 p.m. Meeting: The Making and Managing of Albuquerque’s Urban Wildlife Refuge: Valle de Oro National Wildlife Refuge.

Join the Valle de Oro National Wildlife Refuge staff as they present on the development of the community-based refuge just south of Albuquerque. They will highlight current habitat restoration and management in the effort to re-establish a variety of Middle Rio Grande habitats on the refuge. Katie McVey, Deputy Refuge Manager, and Charisa Bell, UNM grad student intern for the past two years, will describe the brief history of the refuge, community collaboration work, current projects, and the future vision for this land.

Katie McVey: Katie McVey is the Deputy Refuge Manager for Valle de Oro National Wildlife Refuge. She has worked with plants, wildlife and people in the West since 2006. Shortly after earning her MS in Raptor Biology from Boise State University, she joined the US Fish and Wildlife Service and has worked at three Refuges. She enjoys spending time outdoors and gardening with her family.

Charisa Bell: Charisa Bell is also known as “Cherry.” She is an up-and-coming biological technician/intern and UNM student who has been working at Valle de Oro NWR for the past 2 years. She started out as a Rocky Mountain Youth Corps Conservation Crew member stationed at the Albuquerque office located on the refuge. She graduated in 2019 with a B.S in Biology from the University of New Mexico and recently returned to learn more about botany as she continues working on the refuge habitat restoration.

We plan to meet in person at the UNM Continuing Eduction Building, 1634 University Ave NE. Watch this website page and your email for updates about any changes.

The University requires all attendees at their building to wear 3-layer masks. That is, KN95 or N95 masks. The latter have recently become available for free from the federal government at certain CVS and Walgreens pharmacies.
