From the initial keynote presentation to the final field trips, the September state conference of the Native Plant Society in Taos was a tremendous success. We want to pass along that success to our local teachers and students by offering two $250 grants for education relating to native plants in the fields of botany, biology or ecology.

Grants will be awarded to any school or teacher in Taos County according to the following guidelines, keeping the mission of the Native Plant Society of NM in mind (see below). Funds can be used anytime in calendar year 2018.

Anticlea mogollonensis: Mogollon Death Camas

The Mongollon death camas is a perennial herb in the lily family. It is a narrow endemic of the Gila National Forest, where it is limited to growing in the understory of montane and subalpine conifer forests above 8,700 feet. This rare plant faces an uncertain future in the Gila Wilderness of the southwestern New Mexico. the vast majority of its habitat and all the known populations of this lovely plant were destroyed in the Whitewater-Baldy fire, which burned nearly 300,000 acres in 2012.

The Native Plant Society is excited to announce a new curriculum

Native Plant Curriculum

for native plants: From Ponderosa to Prickly Pear · Exploring the Native Plants of New Mexico. This ecoregional curriculum, developed by the Southwest Program of the Institute for Applied Ecology, offers a complete study of native plants, and lessons encourage students to explore what is outside their door and to journey through the flora, ecology, landscape management, and cultural plant relationships unique to New Mexico and the Southwest.
