Remember that a poster is not a paper. Rely on photos, tables, and figures to present your story. For details, interested people can talk with you directly during the conference. Also consider preparing an 8.5 x 11” handout of the poster itself, or of background text, references, or other supplemental material to have available for people to take home with them. What do you want people to remember?
Title and author. The title should be short and easily readable from a distance, with the author’s name, research group, and department listed below the title in a smaller font.
Introduction. Your research or other work may be presented as a problem, question, or hypothesis.
Protocol/Methods. Present this as a bulleted list or outline that excludes most details. The protocol should clearly explain how the results were obtained. Any data analysis must be explained here, preferably using tables and figures.
Tables, graphs, photos, and figures. All must be self-explanatory and easy to read. They should have 1- or 2-line headings in a larger font that state the “take-home” message.
General conclusions. What is the answer to the question? Were hypotheses rejected? Do the results lead to any conclusions? What new hypotheses do the results suggest, or what new findings are indicated? What knowledge is presented? The importance of study results, or of anything you are presenting, should be clear.
Physical layout. Use the layout to help tell your story. Dark print on a white or very light background has the best readability.
Size. The poster should not be over 4 feet wide.
Don’t forget to bring an easel to display your poster.
There will not be a place to hang, tape, or pin one.
