With one of the higher plant species
diversities in New Mexico, Soledad
Canyon is a place we return to often.
We’ll see Arizona White Oak (Quercus
arizonica), Organ Mountain Oak
(Quercus x organensis), Wright’s
Silktassel (Garrya wrightii), lots of cacti
including Opuntia engelmannii,
Chihuahuan Pineapple Cactus
(Echinomastus intertextus aka early
bloomer), New Mexico Rainbow Cactus
(Echinocereus chloranthus), Fendler’s
Hedgehog (Echinocereus fendleri), and
Little Nipple Cactus (Mammilaria
meiacantha). We’ll walk the 1.5 mile
loop; you can independently continue
on to make it a 3-mile walk. Uneven,
rocky ground, steep in places. No
shade. No restrooms.
